Many many years into the
future, Man was large enough to bring the universe under his domain.
He learned how to leave his home planet. He learned how to set foot
on distant plains and planets. He learned how to survive for a few days on those
vast, open plains of lifeless dust and rock and other never seen before substances. He brought back with him
samples of what he saw and set foot on. And then he also learned how to
combine other substances with that sample in order to engineer an
environment conducive to the survival of his species. And then he
went back to those vast open, uninhibited planets to recreate what he
had seen in his home planet; Earth.
Man, as a species is the
most dominant living creation on Earth; a planet that co-incidentally
happened to have all the right ingredients for the creation and
re-generation of life in bodily forms. Among the many millions of
species living in his home planet, Man emerged as the clear winner
over all others. In fact Man even had to restrain, by force, others
of his species to not engage in dominance over other species because
it was threatening the very existence of such species.
Now, a discussion as the
above provokes the obvious question; what was it that led to the rise
of Man at such great a magnitude? Was it the God given ability of
speech? Was it the ability to think and generate ideas that led to the superiority of
Man over all other identified species on earth? Or was it in the
unusual and unexplainable mindset of man that he should wear clothes
to cover himself? To the casual thinker it would seem that a
combination of all these above mentioned factors along with some
other unmentioned ones would be the right answer.
But then again, according
to most reports, Man, as a species, having survived for nearly 200,000
years in his current form did not appear to make such technological
advances until about the 19th century. So what was the
catalyst that sparked the massive advancement in the scale of Man's
achievements?
The answer lies in
Computers. The casual observer would even go so far as to say that
had the computer been invented before the automobile, none of us
would have experienced the pleasure of driving a car. But if this
post is about computers it is probably outdated by by about 30 years.
This post is about how the computer assisted Man in conquering the
universe.
At this point in time, Man
is taking the first steps towards centralizing all computing
resources around the globe in a move to create a super-giant cloud of
data, information, storage and platforms for various data
representation methodologies. The benefits of a centralized computing
resource are immense. But so are the risks if its security is
compromised. Its like building a super-bad lightning fighter jet and
then the enemy stealing the keys. But this blog post is not about cloud
security either so lets not go there.
The computing cloud
enabled man to communicate faster (when I say faster I mean like
'real-time faster' across different time zones). It helped man
process information faster. The ability to scale resources according
to the computing need meant, work that took days or even weeks to
complete now took only a fraction of that time because the cloud
allowed Man to dedicate computing resources to what was most
important and thus exponentially increasing levels of efficiency and
productivity.
In its initial stages the
computer was a huge machine (literally huge) dedicated to complex
processes for Governments; specifically, the military. And then in a
move to commercialize the industry, the personal computer was made.
Soon, however, in the coming years, the computing device in the users
possession was reduced to a mere form of data input or output. Processes took place in the global cloud.
Tackling the challenges of
managing a global computing cloud without a virtual bloodbath
happening, enabled Man to further learn how to fine-tune his
scientific and technological capabilities. Experiments and case
studies that took years of observation were now virtualized, and
deriving from the various bits of information stored in the cloud,
answers given instantaneously. This meant that expanding the borders
of human habitation was possible. Man, who wasn't given wings to fly,
was now able to fly away from his natural habitation and conquer,
recreate and inhabit entire other planets that were not designed for
him in the first place.
Sometimes I wonder what
God was thinking when he created Man. Or was it God's plan all along?
